This guest post was written by Dr. Tom Spears, an MBBS from the UK who is serving at our hospital for a year (along with his wife Melanie who works in public health). We are so grateful to our volunteer physicians who give of themselves to the people of Far Western Nepal. My first few months in Dadeldhura… The last few months have been good (just to say that at the outset!) and I would thoroughly encourage anyone who is thinking about coming here to serve to just do it. It has also been challenging in many ways: learning [...]

This post was written by Melanie Bhatta, RN, a nurse from the United States who is serving at our hospital for a year. Malnutrition is a significant problem here in Nepal, especially in the rural villages. Poverty and a lack of knowledge about a balanced diet compound each other to cause long-term health effects, which we see in some of our children at the hospital. Children are not only not getting enough food to eat, but also the foods they do eat do not provide the proper nutrients that their growing bodies need. In response to this problem, our [...]

Yesterday our MedShare container arrived after a long journey which started halfway around the world in Atlanta, Georgia in the U.S. The 40 foot container traveled over the ocean to India, where the goods were then divided up and loaded onto two trucks which made their way to Dadeldhura. Our staff and some of our community members helped unload the trucks, and it was like Christmas again as we inventoried all of the items we received – from basic necessities such as gloves, needles, and suture, to high quality surgical instruments and equipment to perform endoscopies. Some of the supplies [...]

We had written previously on our blog about raising funds for a container full of donated medical equipment from MedShare. We were thrilled to reach our goal this past September, and are now anxiously awaiting the arrival of our 40-foot container full of supplies for our hospital. The container left the US last month and is now on a cargo ship somewhere in the China Sea on its way to Kolkata, India. From there it will travel by land to Dadeldhura, and we hope to receive the shipment around the end of this month. You can follow the progress of [...]

20 year old Dambar came to our hospital with his twin brother and shared his story with us. He was born second, and during his delivery there was some trouble with getting him out. Most likely as a result of this he lives with cerebral palsy. His speech is quite minimal and difficult to understand. Dambar is able to walk, although due to his cerebral palsy, his gait is quite halting and jerky. They live with their mother and three other brothers and their families. They are a low caste family, and are quite poor. Despite owning a small plot [...]

Every time you get into a vehicle around here, you’re taking a risk. How big of a risk depends on a number of factors – night driving, weather, fog, condition of the road itself, intoxicated drivers, etc. Four days ago, we had a reminder of just how treacherous travel can be on the mountain roads leading to and from our hospital. A couple districts away a bus accident took place, with 28 people injured and 8 dead. 24 of the injured were treated at our hospital. We received word of the accident at around 9:30am, but because of the remoteness [...]
